A research agent is a workflow, not just a longer answer

Google’s April 2026 Deep Research update offers a useful case study in latency, evidence and source access.

What Google announced

Google’s April 2026 announcement distinguishes a faster Deep Research configuration from Deep Research Max, intended for more comprehensive background work. It describes connecting web research with custom sources and generating cited analyses and visual outputs. These are vendor descriptions of product capabilities. They do not establish that every generated report is correct or that a chart has been independently verified. The useful product distinction is between an interactive experience and an asynchronous research workflow, where latency, coverage and the user’s opportunity to inspect sources may have different priorities.

Our career interpretation: specify the research contract

For an AI PM portfolio, write down the question the research must answer, which sources are allowed, the freshness requirement and what should happen if evidence conflicts. A financial diligence brief and a quick competitor overview should not share an undefined quality standard. Design a source table that separates direct findings, conflicting evidence and your interpretation. Decide whether missing evidence should stop the task or appear as a visible gap. These are our suggested product requirements, not claims that the announced system handles every case in this way. They make the research experience easier to evaluate.

Test usefulness before adding automation

Build a small, manually checked research brief on a public topic. Give a second reader only the brief and ask which decision they can make, which claim they would verify, and where the reasoning is unclear. Then compare an automated draft against that standard. Track citation support, important omissions, outdated facts and time spent correcting the result. A report that is fast to generate but slow to validate may not save the user much work. In interviews, explain how you would measure that total effort instead of treating word count or visual polish as evidence of research quality.

Put it into practice

Your next research steps.

  1. Define scope and freshness before generating a report.
  2. Check whether each citation supports the adjacent claim.
  3. Measure correction and verification time.
