What the discussion frames
The a16z discussion frames the agentic interface as a move from answering in chat toward taking action. That is an investment and product thesis, not an independent census of how all users behave. It is useful because it changes the design question: the interface must help people understand what a system is about to do, not merely whether its answer reads well. The source should be evaluated as a perspective from investors with commercial interests in the ecosystem. It does not prove that chat interfaces disappear or that an autonomous design is appropriate for every workflow.
Our career interpretation: map commitment points
Consider a travel-planning prototype. Researching an itinerary, placing a temporary hold and charging a card are different commitments. A strong product brief marks each transition and specifies the user evidence or approval required. Apply the same thinking to enterprise software: drafting a CRM update differs from changing a customer record, and summarizing an invoice differs from authorizing payment. For a PM or designer portfolio, show the permissions and recovery experience beside the happy path. This is our proposed design exercise. It demonstrates how product judgment extends beyond producing an attractive conversation screen.
A practical prototype brief
Pick a workflow with one meaningful action and design three states: preparing, awaiting approval and completed. Add a fourth state for ambiguous or failed execution. Explain how a user can inspect the evidence, cancel before commitment, and tell whether a retry might duplicate the action. Test the wording with a few people using a paper prototype before building an agent. Ask them what they believe has already happened at each screen. If they cannot tell the difference between a suggestion and a completed action, the interface needs work even if the underlying model is accurate.
Put it into practice
Your next research steps.
- Mark the action that changes external state.
- Design a clear approval and failure screen.
- Measure user understanding, not only task speed.
