Test the business procedure, not just the tool call

What Amazon describes

Amazon’s SOP-Bench announcement describes evaluating agents on standard operating procedures with functioning tools and known outcomes. Its purpose is to combine capabilities that isolated tests often separate, including interpreting a procedure, coordinating tools and recovering from problems. The authors report that results vary by task and setup; newer models and larger tool sets do not automatically improve performance. This source concerns the benchmark and experiments described in the release. It does not prove that any particular agent is safe for a real financial, medical or customer-facing procedure without additional domain-specific testing.

Our career interpretation: operational knowledge is part of the specification

A business analyst can contribute to an AI project by making a procedure executable and testable. Identify the trigger, required inputs, allowed decisions, exceptions and final record. Ask what evidence establishes that the work actually happened. A support email saying a refund is complete differs from a verified refund transaction. A completed form differs from an accepted application. These distinctions can become acceptance criteria that engineers and domain owners share. This is our application of the research idea, not a claim that the benchmark reproduces your employer’s process or that a procedure written on paper is already unambiguous.

Create a safe procedure simulation

Model a harmless workflow locally, such as routing fictional inventory requests. Include a missing field, a duplicate request and an unavailable item. Define the expected final state before implementing the agent or rules. Record the steps and verify that a retry cannot create a duplicate outcome. Compare two implementations on the same cases, and explain which failures come from interpretation versus execution. Do not connect the exercise to live payment or customer systems. A simple simulation with clear outcomes can demonstrate process modeling, test design and cross-functional communication more convincingly than an impressive demo that never encounters an exception.

Put it into practice

Your next research steps.

  1. Define final-state checks and exception cases.
  2. Test duplicate and interrupted requests.
  3. Keep a training simulation separate from production systems.
