What the engineering report found
Anthropic describes agents struggling to finish complex application work across separate context windows. Failure modes included attempting too much in one session and declaring completion prematurely. The published approach separates initial environment setup from subsequent incremental coding, leaving structured artifacts for later sessions. These are observations from the authors’ engineering experiments and examples, not proof that one harness solves every long-running task. The important distinction is between having room to continue generating and having enough reliable state to know what should happen next. A larger prompt alone does not establish that work is complete.
Our career interpretation: show the state model
For software or FDE candidates, a useful project explanation includes the state that survives interruption. Which tasks are complete? Which checks passed? Which external actions occurred? What can safely be retried? These questions connect agent engineering with ordinary practices such as version control, change review and recovery documentation. Build a small local workflow that can stop halfway and restart without duplicating an action. Avoid hiding all status inside a conversational transcript. A reviewer should be able to inspect a simple task record and understand the next step without guessing what the prior agent intended.
Test interruption as a first-class case
Choose a harmless workflow, such as turning public text files into a local index. Stop it after an intermediate output, then resume it and compare the result with an uninterrupted run. Include a corrupt or missing input and explain whether the job should skip, retry or stop. Keep the test small enough to reproduce without paid infrastructure. Document which guarantees come from code and which still rely on model judgment. In an interview, explain how you would prevent a successful partial run from being mistaken for full acceptance, and how you would detect a regression when the model or instructions change.
