AI transformation needs a workforce plan, not just a model selection

What the source actually says

BCG’s February 2026 article argues that people and organizational changes are central to obtaining value from AI. It discusses leadership alignment, structured learning and changes to work alongside algorithms and enabling technology. Its division of AI value into algorithm, technology and people components is a consulting framework, not a law fixing every project’s economics. The authors also compare organizations classified as more or less mature in their research. Such comparisons can guide questions, but cannot prove that training alone caused superior financial performance.

Our career interpretation

Our interpretation for technology consulting applicants is to make implementation visible. A model choice is one row in a much larger delivery plan. Someone must own the source data, learn the revised process, approve exceptions and handle the transition from existing systems. Training also differs from competence: attendance does not show whether a user can spot an incorrect result. A candidate who explains this distinction can discuss organizational change without pretending to be an executive. Use concrete deliverables such as a role-impact map, a learning task and an operating handover. These reveal whether you understand the work around a technical system, including responsibilities that continue after a prototype is demonstrated.

Turn the idea into evidence

Take a hypothetical claims-triage or service-ticket assistant and create a role-by-role impact table. For each role, list the existing task, changed task, new skill and a test of that skill. Add an owner for unresolved exceptions and a fallback if adoption is slow. Design an exercise in which a user must catch a plausible but wrong output. Specify how you would observe behavior after training rather than count certificates. The artifact is small enough for a student project, but exposes assumptions a technical demo misses. Present it as your proposed design, with no invented client outcomes. Also identify who can stop the rollout and what information that person would need.

Put it into practice

Your next research steps.

  1. Create a task and role-impact map.
  2. Test competence with a realistic failure case.
  3. Add a handover and fallback plan to the demo.
